This project was a restoration of a 1,300-square-foot detached studio, part of a five-acre mountaintop retreat designed by architect Thornton Ladd in 1953.
The firm converted the studio, originally designed for Ladd himself, into a modern guest house.

Originally, the roof terrace of the studio had sliding canvas screens, with a sliding partition separating it from the living space. As part of the restoration, we enclosed the terrace with sliding glass panels and motorized sun screens.
The owner’s interest in Japanese architecture and design informed the choice of interior materials—warm woods including cedar and maple for the floors and ceilings, furnished with tatami mats . Marmol radziner custom shop fabricated all of the custom cabinetry, doors, and much of the furniture.
