Top 10 Interior and Architecture design using Copper

Buildings and Interiors covered with copper are admired for centuries . Copper is a beautiful material. No other metal, except gold, has a colour. When exposed to the environment, copper’s shiny red becomes brown and then progresses to its distinctive green patina.

This article presents some of the best architecture and interior from around world. It showcases the rich variety of surfaces that copper and its alloys can deliver for contemporary design – whether gold, brown, green or blue – all living materials continuing to develop in the local environment. But what stands out from our ten projects is the wealth of different, sometimes innovative, approaches taken by designers today with how and where they use copper.

Because of the central location of the building, the key consideration was that all sides of the scheme matter: walking around the building will reveal different architectural experiences, ranging from minimalistic façades to complex architectural forms. The parking lot frontage is open with extensive glazing in black frames following the sharp angles. The side elevations are calmer but still exciting with irregular windows continuing the black edged theme.

To meet both technical and architectural expression requirements, we determined that the main facade, pitched roof and other elements should be covered with copper. The green pre-patinated copper surface complements grey coloured boarding, window frames and other elements, providing a restrained palette of cool, contemporary colours.

The use of expressed longitudinal joints between copper sheets is found both on contemporary buildings and also the nearby traditional interwar houses, emphasizing the connection between past and the present. This approach also avoided overt details, such as gutters and downpipes, that would spoil the clean, modern lines of the building

THE GOLD OASIS

UPPERCUT

Designers UPPERCUT describe the reasoning behind their crisp, minimalist design of golden copper alloy ‘pods’ apparently floating above the undulating landscape of a golf course near Udine, Northern Italy.
‘Gold’ is how we describe The Lodge, a complex of four buildings, surrounded by greenery and protected to the north by mountains. The Lodge is located near the Natural Oasis of Quadris, home to the reintroduction of the White Stork and protection of the Hermit Ibis.

THE SHADES OF COPPER

Interior design and external alterations, by architects AWW, sought to add value to letting space and bring the 90,600 ft2 building up to date. The updated massive, glazed entrance atrium incorporates feature walls – including inset doors – faced with horizontal panels, alternating in three colours: light and dark brown pre-oxidised, and standard ‘mill finish’ copper. Structural columns are similarly enwrapped with alternating finish copper bands and the copper detailing is even continued into elements of bespoke furniture.

The internal copper cladding had a post-lacquer finish applied to arrest further oxidisation, so retaining the three colours and protecting the surface. This creates a reflective surface, mirroring and enhancing the lightness of the atrium space.

These low-key structures along the city centre water-front defer to their historic surrounding and prioritise open views of the Royal Palace. The architect’s concept involves interacting ‘cones’ – units of varying size and number depending on the project and location, generating buildings without specific fronts or backs.
Roofs and walls are clad with burnished brass, which harmonises well with the stone and stucco facades in the background and creates a unified, sculptural expression. In addition, variations in surface texture are achieved using different techniques. On this exposed quayside site, brass also offers great corrosion resistance and durability
